Terms

The rules for using Itemized Health, in plain words.

Effective September 28, 2026

These are our beta terms. We'll update them before we start charging anyone, and we'll email you when we do.

The short version

  • We explain your medical bill and point out charges worth asking about. You decide what to do.
  • We are not doctors, insurers, or lawyers. Nothing here is medical, legal, or money advice.
  • Our explanations, scripts and letters are written with AI. They can be wrong, so read them before you use them.
  • Use it for your own bills, or bills you're responsible for. Don't misuse it.
  • You can stop using it and delete your information any time.

Agreeing to these terms

These terms are between you and Itemized Health (“we” and “us”). By using this website you agree to them, and to our privacy page, which says what we keep and who else sees it. If you don't agree, please don't use the site. You need to be at least 18 to use it.

What we do, and what we don't

You tell us about a visit and copy the charges from your bill or from the paper your insurance sent. We explain each charge in plain words, check it against known billing mistakes, and flag the ones worth a question. For a flagged charge, we write a phone script and a letter you can use to ask about it.

  • A flag is a question, not proof. A charge we flag may turn out to be right. A charge we don't flag may still be wrong: we only check for the mistakes we know how to spot, and we say which charges we checked and which we only explained.
  • We don't act for you. We don't call your provider or insurer, send letters, or file appeals. You choose whether to use what we write, and you're responsible for what you send.
  • We can't promise a result. We don't guarantee that any charge will be lowered or any money returned.
  • Keep paying on time. A bill you leave unpaid while you ask about it can still go to collections. Ask your provider to hold it while they look into it.

Not medical, legal, or money advice

Itemized Health is an information tool. It isn't a doctor, a hospital, an insurance company, a law firm, or a financial adviser, and using it doesn't make us any of those for you. For questions about your health, your coverage, or your legal rights, talk to your doctor, your insurer, or a lawyer.

AI can make mistakes

The explanations, scripts and letters are written with an AI service. The dollar figures you type are used exactly as you typed them, and figures we had to estimate are marked “Estimated”. Even so, AI can misread a situation or get a detail wrong. Check everything against your own bill and insurance paperwork before you rely on it, and tell us when something looks wrong: every result has a link to report it.

Your account and what you enter

  • You can check a bill without an account. A check without an account can hold up to 3 bills and 3 checks, and is deleted 7 days after you start unless you save it with your email.
  • You sign in with a code sent to your email. Keep your email account secure: anyone who can read it can sign in as you.
  • What you enter should be true to your bill. Only add someone else's bill if you're responsible for it or have their permission.
  • Your bills and what you tell us are yours. You let us store and use them to run the service, as the privacy page describes.
  • The scripts and letters we write for you are yours to use, change, and send.

Using it fairly

Please don't:

  • try to see or change anyone else's information, or get around the site's security or limits;
  • use scripts or bots to run checks, or check bills in bulk (an account can run up to 25 checks a day);
  • copy, resell, or build a competing product from what the site shows or writes;
  • use it to harass anyone, or for anything illegal.

We may limit or close an account that does any of these.

What it costs

Checking a bill is free. The phone script and letter are free for your first bill that needs them. After that, they come with a subscription of $49 a year, for every bill in your home. Payment is handled by Stripe; we never see your card. A subscription renews each year until you cancel it, which you can do any time from Billing in your account menu. It stays active until the end of the year you paid for. We'll never charge you without asking first. If you think you were charged by mistake, write to support@itemizedhealth.com.

Codes on your bill

We show the billing codes you enter, the description from your own bill, and our plain-English explanation. We don't show official CPT code descriptions. CPT is a registered trademark of the American Medical Association.

A beta, as it is

Itemized Health is new and still changing. Features may change or stop, and the site may sometimes be down. As far as the law allows, we provide it as it is, without promises that it will be free of errors or always available.

Limits on our responsibility

As far as the law allows, we aren't responsible for indirect or unexpected losses from using the site, including decisions you make about paying or disputing a bill. If we are responsible for a loss, the most we owe is what you paid us in the 12 months before it happened. Some places don't allow these limits, so they may not all apply to you.

Stopping

You can stop using Itemized Health any time. You can delete all your bills on the Delete your data page, and close your account by writing to support@itemizedhealth.com from the email on it.

Changes and questions

If we change these terms, we'll update this page and the date above, and email you about anything that matters. Questions? Write to support@itemizedhealth.com.
